Review

Divergent is a dystopian novel, set in the future, featuring a post-apocalyptic Chicago. The story follows the protagonist Beatrice Prior, who is a part of the faction system. There are 5 factions: Erudite - which values intelligence, Dauntless - which values courage, Abnegation - which values selflessness, Amity - which values kindness and Candor - which values honesty. On Choosing Day, the sixteen-year olds must pick one of the factions to which they devote the rest of their lives.

The plot has an underlying theme of struggle against the system bases on conformation. The protagonist faces several emotional and physical conflicts in her journey to choose the right faction and pass Dauntless' harrowing entrance tests to avoid becoming factionless. What makes it easy to empathize with her is the fact that she faces the struggle of being a 'Stiff' - a previous member of the Abnegation faction.

She is ostracized at first and later, her abilities as a Dauntless are doubted.  This structure is quite similar to the high school social system and this makes it easy for young adults to relate to. Divergent has a plot that is quite different from other dystopian novels, which makes it an intriguing read.

The element of forbidden romance is quite exciting for female readers.  The relationship between Four and Tris is extremely powerful and sensual.

Divergent also has a complex language structure which, while interesting for advanced readers like myself, can be quite complicated for beginners. Despite this particular feature of the novel, I highly recommend this novel for young adults.
